Discover a powerful story of courage, friendship and the extraordinary bond between humans and animals in The Messenger by Lyndsay Roberts Rayne. This beautifully illustrated, wordless children’s story follows a small messenger dog whose journey takes him from peaceful farm life to the front line of the First World War.
During WWI, more than 30,000 dogs served Britain, France and Germany in vital roles. Inspired by the experiences of these remarkable animals, The Messenger follows one dog from idyllic puppyhood on a rural farm to war dog training and eventually to the trenches, where he and his human companion face their greatest challenge.
Told entirely through powerful, cinematic illustrations, this sensitive story explores sacrifice, comfort, loyalty and courage without relying on written narrative. It offers readers an accessible yet meaningful introduction to the impact of war and the important roles animals have played during human conflicts.
